Saratov region is situated in the southeast of Eastern European plain in the Lower Povolzhie. On the north it is contiguous with Samara, Ulyanovsk and Penza regions, on the west with Voronezh and Tambov regions, in the South with Volgograd and Orenburg regions and the Republic of Kazakhstan. The distance from Saratov to Moscow - 858 km. Saratov region was founded in 1936. It's area is about 100,000.2 square km. |
There are 2.719.000 of residents in Saratov region (1999), urban population 75%, 17 cities, 33 villages of urban type (1993). The center is Saratov. The Volga river divides Saratov region into elevated right bank and lower left bank. Average temperatures for January is - 12C, July 22C. The average amount of precipitations is about 250-450mm. a year. The main river is the Volga. There are the following industries in the region machine-building, metal-working (machines, trolleybuses, farming machines, bearings, diesel engines, refrigerators, etc.), mining of gas and mineral oil; oil industry, chemical industry, industry of building materials, woodworking industry, light and food industries. There is the State Electrical Station on the Volga and Balakovskaya Nuclear Electrical Station.
